Cats: Liquid or Solid?
Ever looked at the way a cat can perfectly fit into a round bowl or a square box and thought: are cats liquid or solid? That’s exactly what Marc Antoine Fardin decided to research, and it led him to win the Ig Nobel Prize in 2017 for his findings. If you didn’t know, the Ig Nobel Prize celebrates achievements that are funny or unusual, but also make you think.

Fardin was inspired after seeing articles online debating whether cats were liquid or not, given that the definition of liquid is “material that takes the shape of its container.” Fardin took this funny online debate and translated it into scientific terms before he began researching.

So, are cats liquid or solid? Well, the jury is still out, but you can find out more by watching the full interview here.

Cat of the Week: Poets Square Cats
For our first cat feature we wanted to introduce an amazing and unique cat rescue, Poets Square Cats. You might have seen them on TikTok, where cats like Sad Boy, Francois, Trader Joe, and Monster Paws have stolen the hearts of over 600,000 subscribers.

Courtney G started Poets Square Cats when she moved into her new house and realized it came with a large colony of feral cats! She has worked hard to spay or neuter and vaccinate each cat, and has socialized many feral cats and kittens to be adopted.

Poets Square Cats continues to help new cats they find in the Tucson, Arizona area, while continuously caring for the cats in their colony. If you want background stories on each cat or just want to support an a-meow-zing cat rescue, check out their Instagram.

Cats on Glass Tables
Ever wonder what a cat loaf looks like from another angle? This article on the “Cats on Glass Tables” Reddit community has got you covered!

Prepare yourself for insanely cute cats and tons of toe beans.

Cat Sonar?
Ever wondered how your cat manages to surprise you with playful sneak attacks? Turns out, cats use their incredible hearing to mentally map out where their owners are.

Researchers at Kyoto University in Japan studied 50 cats, some from cat cafes and some domestic house cats. They conducted a hearing test by placing each cat in a room with two speakers on opposite ends of the room. They would then play recordings of the cats’ owners’ voices from each speaker.

The study showed that when their owner’s voice was played from one speaker and then quickly from the next, the cats showed surprise. This indicates that cats have socio-spatial awareness that we didn’t know about. One researcher said “Cats may have a mind that is more profound than we think.” We agree!
