The Most Beautiful Van Cat of the Year
Have you ever heard of the cat breed Van cats? They get their name from where they can be found, in the Lake Van area in eastern Turkey. They have different colored eyes (called heterochromia) and snow white fur, and though they’re all gorgeous, there is a search every year for the most beautiful of all. This year’s was Mia, whose blue and green eyes stole the show.

The contest is held to promote the Van cat breed, the national breed of Turkey which has now spread worldwide. Van cats are known for their friendliness, fluffy fox-like tail, and for their love of water - something not all cats can claim!

The Van cat contest helps bring awareness to Van cats so that they don’t go extinct; happily, Mia, the most beautiful Van cat this year, is pregnant, and will soon have a litter of beautiful Van kittens joining the family!

Cat(s) of the Day
Meet today's Cats of the Day: Truffles & Cheeze-it!

Truffles, a pastel calico, and Cheeze-it, an orange tabby, are a bonded pair from North Carolina. These sisters came from different litters but love each other more than anything - except maybe wet food. Both of them triumphed over health issues early in their life and now demand extra cuddles for their perseverance.

Truffles was born before the pandemic, and we’re told she is still confused as to why her parents work from home, but Cheeze-it has always lived like this and wouldn’t have it any other way!

Truffles and Cheeze-it love to help their mom, Christina, work from her home office, which happens to be very sunny in the afternoon, perfect for sleeping on the job. Although these two fight over the best cozy spots in the house, at the end of the day they don’t mind sharing.

We loved getting to know Truffles and Cheeze-it and would love to meet your cat too. Submit their name, picture, and anything that makes them special to meow@dailypurrcats.com (or just reply to this email) for a chance to be featured in a future Cat of the Day segment!

Is this Cat a Princess?
The Van cat may have a coat as pure as snow, but this cat happens to have a purrfect Snow White disguise!

How Cats See the World
Cats are known for being sneaky because of their night vision, but what else do cats see differently than humans?

First of all, cats see a view of 200 degrees, while humans only see about 180 degrees, so they’ve got an advantage there. Their eyes also have six to eight times more rod cells than humans, which helps them see better in low light. Cats can also detect motion easily in the dark because of the unique shape of their eyes.

However, humans have a few advantages over cats' vision. First, humans have 10 to 12 times better motion detection in bright light than cats. Second, cats cannot see nearly as many colors as humans. And third, cats are nearsighted - although, we do know quite a few humans who are too! So although we do see the world differently than cats, we wouldn’t say one vision is better than the other.

Answer: 67.8 decibels, roughly the same volume as a shower! This is more than double what the average cat purr volume is - 25db.
