🐈 Cats and cappuccinos

*|MC:SUBJECT|*

“The cat wrinkled its nose and managed to look unimpressed. "Calling cats," it confided, "tends to be a rather overrated activity. Might as well call a whirlwind.”
― Neil Gaiman, Coraline

Happy Thursday! Here's the scoop:
Did You Know?
In the 1870s, the city of Liège, Belgium tried to train 37 cats to _____________.

Find the answer below!
Yay for Strays
Yay for Strays, the latest hotspot in Windsor, Ontario, isn't just another café—it's a sanctuary for cat lovers and strays alike. Owner Chantelle Gaudette, a self-proclaimed animal lover, created a space that feels like a warm hug, aiming to offer peace and comfort not just to her guests but to the cats in need of a home. The décor is reminiscent of a cozy grandma's house, adding to the charm and ensuring that everyone feels right at home.

The cat café, the first of its kind in Windsor, doubles as a lounge and a quirky gift shop. On its opening day, the café was bustling with patrons eager to enjoy a slice of cheesecake and some quality time with the resident kitties, all of whom are up for adoption from the Windsor-Essex County Humane Society.

With comfy sofas, board games, and a well-stocked library, it’s clear Yay for Strays is not just a café but a community hub designed to bring together people and pets. Whether you're in for a quick pet or a long lounge, this charming spot has quickly become a must-visit for locals looking to unwind with some whiskered friends.
DIY Wand Toy
Ready to become your cat’s favorite human? Grab some string, sticks, and feathers and follow these simple steps to create a DIY cat wand that'll put your kitty's paws in overdrive.

Supplies:
  • A sturdy wood dowel (3-feet in length and ½ inch in diameter)
  • Tan or black suede laces
  • Small colored pompoms
  • Coloured felt
  • Feathers
  • Jingle bells with eyelets
  • Fishing line
  • Barrel swivels with and without a clip-end
Instructions:
  1. Drill a small hole about an inch away from one end of the dowel.
  2. Using the fishing line, attach a barrel swivel with a clip to the hole in the dowel. Leave 6-12 inches between the swivel and the dowel. Trim away any excess fishing line.
  3. Create the toy portion of the wand from the suede laces, pompoms, felt, or feathers by sewing the items together with a sewing needle and fishing line. A jingle bell can be added for extra noise and fun. Get creative and try making toys that resemble mice, birds, or bugs.
  4. Tie a length of about 24 inches of fishing line to the toy. At the other end of the line, tie on a barrel swivel without a clip end.
  5. Since the toys can be removed from the wand, feel free to make several so you can swap them out for endless feline fun.
  6. Enjoy playtime with your best friend.

Do You Want To Profit Off the American Whiskey Industry?
Let’s talk about a little-known secret that’s upending the whiskey supply chain.

Some of the most prominent names in the industry are outsourcing a critical (and lucrative) piece of the value chain: the whiskey aging process.

Many brand name operators are moving their casks off balance sheet, which has blown the distillery door wide open for investors who want a piece of the action. How does it work? We’re glad you asked.

Take this recent real-life deal structured by Vinovest:

In a type of sale and repurchase agreement, Vinovest executed a contract with a major whiskey brand to buy 125 barrels of American Single Malt at $1,350 per barrel and store them for five years. At the end of that aging process, said brand agrees, contractually, to buy the lot back at $2,800 per barrel, bottle it, slap their label on, and bring it to market.

TLDR: Investors, in exchange for their capital and patience, can earn a handsome return for owning full casks of whiskey during the aging process.

Will you seize the opportunity to profit off the American whiskey industry?

Why Cats Lick Us
If you've ever wondered why your cat seems to be on a never-ending licking marathon, you're not alone. Cats spend up to 8% of their waking hours grooming themselves with their rough tongues. But their licking isn't reserved for themselves alone; they'll often extend this behavior to their fellow feline friends and yes, even to humans. And before you flatter yourself, it's not part of any romantic overtures, according to the experts.

So, why do cats lick people? Scientists and cat behavioral experts are still scratching their heads over this one, but a few theories are floating around. One suggests it's a sign of trust, harking back to the kitten days when mama cat used her tongue to clean and bond with her babies. Another theory proposes that your cat is a curious chemist, using their super-sensitive taste buds to gather biochemical data from your skin—perhaps checking if you ate chicken or fish for dinner. And then there’s the idea that your cat might just be branding you as part of their territory, a move akin to them saying, “You’re mine now!”

Regardless of the reason, always remember that a cat’s affection comes with its own set of rules and boundaries. They might not show attachment like dogs do, and they certainly won't rely on you for their sense of security, as research from the University of Lincoln indicates. Cats are independent creatures, and while they might not be plotting world domination, they're definitely in charge of marking their territory—one lick at a time.
3 Tips For Keeping Your Senior Cats Healthy
  1. Regular Veterinary Check-ups: Schedule regular check-ups with your veterinarian to monitor your senior cat's health. As cats age, they are more prone to health issues such as arthritis, dental problems, kidney disease, and hyperthyroidism. Routine examinations allow your vet to detect any potential issues early and provide appropriate treatment or management plans.

  2. Provide a Senior-Friendly Environment: Make adjustments to your cat's environment to accommodate their changing needs as they age. Consider providing ramps or steps to help them access elevated surfaces more easily, invest in a comfortable and supportive bed, and ensure litter boxes are easily accessible. Senior cats may also benefit from a warmer environment, so consider providing heated beds or blankets, especially in colder climates.

  3. Maintain a Healthy Diet: Feed your senior cat a balanced and age-appropriate diet to support their overall health and well-being. Choose high-quality cat food formulated specifically for senior cats, which typically contains lower levels of fat and calories to prevent weight gain and higher levels of protein to support muscle mass. Additionally, consider incorporating supplements such as omega-3 fatty acids or joint support supplements to help manage arthritis or other age-related conditions. Be sure to monitor your cat's weight and adjust their diet as needed to prevent obesity or malnutrition.
